Single-Arm Front Raise
Exercise Description
The Single-Arm Front Raise is an isolation exercise that targets the front portion of the shoulder by lifting one arm forward against resistance. Training one side at a time helps improve muscular balance, coordination, and mind-muscle connection while allowing greater focus on proper movement mechanics. This exercise is effective for developing anterior deltoid strength, shoulder stability, and overall upper-body aesthetics.
Primary Muscles Worked
Anterior Deltoids (Front Shoulders)
Secondary Muscles Worked
Lateral Deltoids (Side Shoulders)
Upper Pectoralis Major
Serratus Anterior
Upper Trapezius
Rotator Cuff Muscles (Stabilizers)
Obliques
Core Muscles (Stabilization)
How to Perform Correctly
Setup
Stand upright holding a dumbbell in one hand in front of your thigh.
Position your feet shoulder-width apart.
Keep a slight bend in the working arm’s elbow.
Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine.
Allow your non-working arm to rest naturally at your side or hold onto a stable object for balance.
Movement
Raise the dumbbell forward in a controlled manner.
Lift until your arm is approximately parallel to the floor or shoulder height.
Keep the elbow slightly bent throughout the movement.
Pause briefly at the top position.
Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position.
Complete all repetitions on one side before switching arms, or alternate sides as desired.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Using Excessive Weight
Heavy weights often lead to swinging and reduced shoulder isolation.
Using Momentum
Avoid leaning backward or using body movement to assist the lift.
Raising the Dumbbell Too High
Lifting significantly above shoulder height may increase stress on the shoulder joint.
Shrugging the Shoulder
Keep the working shoulder down and away from the ear throughout the exercise.
Straightening the Elbow Completely
Maintain a slight bend in the elbow to reduce unnecessary joint stress.
Lowering the Weight Too Quickly
Control the descent to maximize muscle activation and safety.
Rotating the Torso
Keep your body stable and avoid twisting during the movement.
