Exercise Description
The Reverse Grip Dumbbell Curl is an isolation exercise that targets the forearms and upper arms using an overhand (pronated) grip. Unlike traditional curls, this variation places greater emphasis on the brachioradialis and forearm extensor muscles while still engaging the biceps and brachialis. It is an excellent exercise for improving forearm size, grip strength, and overall arm development.

How to Perform Correctly
Setup
Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand.
Position your palms facing backward (overhand grip).
Let the dumbbells rest in front of your thighs.
Place your feet shoulder-width apart.
Lift your chest and pull your shoulders back.
Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine.
Movement
Curl the dumbbells upward by bending your elbows.
Keep your palms facing downward throughout the exercise.
Maintain stationary upper arms and keep your elbows close to your sides.
Continue until the dumbbells reach approximately chest level.
Squeeze your forearms and upper arms at the top position.
Pause briefly at peak contraction.
Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position under control.
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Using Momentum
Avoid swinging your torso or leaning backward to lift the weights.
Moving the Elbows Forward
Keep your elbows close to your torso throughout the movement.
Using Excessive Weight
Heavy weights often compromise wrist position and reduce range of motion.
Allowing the Wrists to Bend Excessively
Keep your wrists neutral and aligned with your forearms.
Incomplete Range of Motion
Fully lower the dumbbells and complete each curl through the full movement.
Shrugging the Shoulders
Keep the shoulders relaxed and avoid trap involvement.
