Dumbbell Incline Bench Press

Diagram of a man performing a dumbbell shoulder press exercise on a seated workout bench, showing start and finish positions, highlighting the shoulder muscles worked.

Exercise Description

The Dumbbell Incline Bench Press is a compound upper-body exercise that targets the upper chest while also strengthening the shoulders and triceps. Using dumbbells allows for a greater range of motion and helps improve muscular balance between both sides of the body.

Primary Muscles Worked

  • Upper Pectoralis Major (Clavicular Head)

Secondary Muscles Worked

  • Anterior Deltoids (Front Shoulders)

  • Triceps Brachii

  • Serratus Anterior

  • Rotator Cuff Muscles (Stabilizers)

How to Perform Correctly

Setup

  1. Adjust a bench to a 30–45° incline.

  2. Sit on the bench holding a dumbbell in each hand.

  3. Lie back and position the dumbbells at chest level.

  4. Plant your feet firmly on the floor.

  5. Keep your chest up and shoulder blades pulled back.

Movement

  1. Press the dumbbells upward until your arms are nearly straight.

  2. Bring the weights slightly toward each other at the top without touching.

  3. Lower the dumbbells slowly and under control until they reach chest level.

  4. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Setting the Bench Too High

  • An incline above 45° places more emphasis on the shoulders and less on the upper chest.

Flaring the Elbows Excessively

  • Keeping elbows directly out to the sides can increase shoulder stress.

Using Too Much Weight

  • Heavy weights often lead to poor technique and reduced range of motion.

Bouncing or Dropping the Weights

  • Lower the dumbbells with control to maximize muscle engagement and reduce injury risk.

Lifting the Hips Off the Bench

  • Keep your back and glutes in contact with the bench throughout the exercise.

Bending the Wrists Backward

  • Maintain neutral wrists aligned with your forearms.
