Concentrate Curl

A muscular man performs a concentration curl exercise using dumbbells on a workout bench. The image compares the start position on the left and the finish position on the right, with the muscles highlighted in red.

Exercise Description

The Concentration Curl is an isolation exercise that targets the biceps through a strict range of motion while minimizing assistance from other muscle groups. Performed in a seated position with the elbow braced against the inner thigh, the exercise helps eliminate momentum and allows for a strong mind-muscle connection. It is highly effective for developing biceps size, strength, and peak contraction.

Primary Muscles Worked

  • Biceps Brachii

Secondary Muscles Worked

  • Brachialis

  • Brachioradialis

  • Forearm Flexors

  • Forearm Extensors (Stabilization)

How to Perform Correctly

Setup

  1. Sit on the edge of a bench with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart.

  2. Hold a dumbbell in one hand using an underhand grip.

  3. Lean slightly forward and brace the back of your upper arm against the inside of your thigh.

  4. Allow the dumbbell to hang toward the floor with your arm nearly fully extended.

  5. Keep your chest lifted and maintain a neutral spine.

Movement

  1. Curl the dumbbell upward by bending your elbow.

  2. Keep your upper arm firmly pressed against your thigh throughout the movement.

  3. Continue until the dumbbell approaches shoulder level.

  4. Squeeze your biceps as hard as possible at the top position.

  5. Pause briefly at peak contraction.

  6. Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position under control.

  7. Fully extend your arm to achieve a complete stretch of the biceps.

  8. Complete all repetitions on one arm before switching sides.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using Momentum

  • Avoid swinging the dumbbell or moving your torso during the exercise.

Lifting the Upper Arm Off the Thigh

  • Keep the upper arm fixed against the thigh to maximize isolation.

Using Excessive Weight

  • Heavy weights often reduce range of motion and compromise technique.

Incomplete Range of Motion

  • Fully lower the dumbbell and complete the curl through the full movement.

Rushing the Movement

  • Perform each repetition slowly and under control.

Shrugging the Shoulder

  • Keep the shoulder relaxed and avoid lifting it during the curl.

Bending the Wrist Excessively

  • Maintain a neutral wrist position throughout the exercise.
